表現手法としての「時間軸変形地図」の新たな可能性
New Possibilities of “Distance Cartogram” as an Expression Technique
「時間軸変形地図」という表現手法は、種々の分野で参照されている手法であるにも関わらず、分析?考察の余地が多く残っており、その表現手法が持つ可能性は十分に明らかになっていない。本研究ではまず、時間軸変形地図の先行事例と、公共交通機関のデータビジュアライゼーションの先行事例を分析する。次に、地図の社会学の観点から時間軸変形地図を考察する。さらに、これらの分析?考察に基づいて修士作品『時間軸時間軸変形地図』（2019年）を制作し、また、これを分析することで、表現手法としての時間軸変形地図の新たな可能性を明らかにする。 1章では、研究背景として、杉浦康平による時間軸変形地図の一般的な評価と、時間軸変形地図に関する筆者の個人的な関心の遷移について述べる。また、本研究が可能になった時代背景として、今日のデータビジュアライゼーション作成ツールの充実とデータ公開によって多様なデータビジュアライゼーションが生まれている状況について述べる。2章では、時間軸変形地図の先行事例を分析する。時間軸変形地図の可能性を明らかにする上で、まずは既存の時間軸変形地図が表現できていることを分析する必要がある。3章では、公共交通機関を題材としたデータビジュアライゼーションを分析する。時間軸変形地図で表現される所要時間は、基本的に公共交通機関の移動に基づいているため、時間軸変形地図は公共交通機関のデータビジュアライゼーションとして捉えられる。4章では、地図の社会学から時間軸変形地図について考察する。時間軸変形地図は「地図」というメディアを利用した表現である。それにも関わらず、既存の時間軸変形地図に関する言説では時間軸変形地図と地図の関係性は十分に考察されてきていない。5章では、修士作品『時間軸時間軸変形地図』の概要と機能について述べる。6章では、作品分析として、修士作品の機能と、修士作品が表現したことを、2、3、4章に基づいて詳述する。7章では、修士作品が表現手法としての「時間軸変形地図」のさまざまな可能性を可視化したと結論づける。また、地理的な地図のイメージの変形としての時間軸変形地図とは違う、時間軸変形地図の可能性ついても言及する。さらに、今後の展望として、2、3章で行った分析?考察から見出された、未だ実現できていない時間軸変形地図の可能性について言及する。
Despite the fact that the “distance cartogram” is an expression technique that has been referenced in various fields, there remains much room for analysis and consideration, and the possibilities of this expression technique has not been fully clarified. This study first analyzes the precedents of distance cartograms and the precedents of data visualization for public transportation. Next, I discuss distance cartogram from the perspective of the sociology of maps. Furthermore, based on these analyses and discussions, I produce a master’s work, “Time Based Time Distance Map” (2019), and also analyze it to reveal new possibilities of distance cartogram as an expression technique. In Chapter 1, as research background, the general evaluation of distance cartogram by Kohei Sugiura and transition of the author’s personal interest in distance cartogram are described. In addition, as historical background that made this research possible, I discuss the situation in which today’s extensive data visualization creation tools and the release of data have given rise to a variety of data visualizations. In Chapter 2, I analyze prior examples of distance cartogram. In clarifying the possibilities of distance cartogram, it is first necessary to analyze what existing distance cartograms are able to express. In Chapter 3, I analyze data visualization on the subject of public transportation. Since the travel times expressed by distance cartogram are basically based on public transportation trips, distance cartogram can be viewed as data visualizations of public transportation. In Chapter 4, I discuss distance cartogram from the sociology of maps. Distance cartogram is an expression that utilizes the medium of “map”. Nevertheless, the relationship between distance cartogram and map has not been sufficiently considered in the prior discourse on distance cartogram. In Chapter 5, I describe the outline and function of the master’s work, “Time Based Time Distance Map”. In Chapter 6, as an analysis of the work, I describe the function of the master’s work and what the master’s work expressed, based on Chapters 2, 3, and 4. In Chapter 7, I conclude that the master’s work has visualized the various possibilities of “distance cartogram”. The possibility of distance cartogram, which is different from distance cartogram as a deformation of the geographical map image, also be discussed. Furthermore, as a future perspective, I mention the possibilities of distance cartogram that have not yet been realized, which were discovered from the analysis and discussion conducted in Chapters 2 and 3.
