IAMAS

The three distinctive characteristics of education and research at IAMAS are: Projects, media art research that students and faculty members perform as a group and implement in society; team-teaching in which faculty members from different disciplines lead classes together; and an original curriculum where students learn both specialized and general knowledge and techniques.

Projects: Practical Research in Society

This is a place were we colloborate with other universities, businesses, and political organizations to implement media research in society and share the results of that research. Students and faculty work together to produce advanced, unique results.

Team-teaching by Professors from Different Fields

To help students acquire the power to create new forms of culture, faculty members from different disciplines guide students as they solve problems related to practical, interdisciplinary reserearch that will help them systematically acquire specialized knolwedge and ability.

Learning both Specialized and General Knowledge and Techniques

With the goal of educating students in this knowledge and these techniques both specialized and general, we hold high-level classes that properly combine lecture, training, and hands-on experience.

Educational Objectives(Master’s Program)

Based on the founding principles of the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences, our educational objective is to cultivate people who can respond to the various problems contemporary society faces; we will do this by helping students acquire the high-level creative ability to build new forms of culture.

Curriculum Policy

Based on the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences' founding principles, we strive to help our students acquire high-level creative ability. We aim to provide excellent guidance for student research, deploying interdisciplinary and practical courses and holding advanced classes with an appropriate combination of lecture, training, and hands-on experience in order to help them systematically acquire specialized knowledge.

  • Special research classes and Project classes help students develop a wide base of knowledge and practical ability to meet society's demands, establishing a foundation that will allow them to flourish as creators.
  • Comprehensive classes in which students judge for themselves and question the social significance of their research.
  • Specialized courses as well as production practice courses, in order to systematically help students to gain specialized knowledge and learn of unique methodologies.
  • Introductory courses where students develop all-purpose skills required for research: identifying problems, coming up with a plan, solving them, creating, communicating, etc.

Diploma Policy

Based on the Institutue of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences' founding principles, our goal is to educate high-level creators who create new forms of culture with scientific techniques and a philosophcial and ideological perspective. Within our curriculum organized to fulfill this purpose, students must pass a final thesis or final thesis and project examination along with a final examination in addition to completing a designated number of credits in order to receive their graduate diploma. At that time examiners will address the following:

  • Has the student acquired the ability required to be a level of special expertise and the ability necessary to be an independant artist, designer, engineer, researcher, or educator?
  • Did the student demonstrate a high-level thinking skills and a strong sense of responsibility, achieving a result that addressed modern social problems and contributed to the happiness of future generations?
  • Could the student actively engage with others specializing in various fields regardless their research area, acquiring a new form of knowledge born within that interaction.

Educational Objectives(Doctoral Program)

Curriculum Development and Implementation Policy (Curriculum Policy)

  1. Basic research subjects are established to cultivate the ability to carry out research activities independently while possessing expertise and to gain research methods for high-quality media expression.
  2. Project research courses are established to foster the ability of people who specialize in a variety of fields, regardless of their research area, to interact actively with one another, to learn how to create “new knowledge” through cross-disciplinary interaction, and to carry out projects from planning to implementation.
  3. Special research courses are established to help students to disseminate the results of research on media expression to society at large and to summarize the results in a thesis while helping them to have a strong sense of responsibility and logic.

Diploma Policy

Based on the school's founding principles, the goal of the program is to nurture more dynamic, expressive individuals who can create a new culture that combines science and technology with philosophical and ideological perspectives. The curriculum is designed to achieve this goal, and students who pass the thesis review and the final examination, in addition to earning the prescribed credits, will be certified as having completed the program and awarded their diploma.

  1. Have you required the necessary skills and expertise to promote research activities as an independent educational researcher, artist, and practitioner, combining scientific intelligence and artistic sensibility?
  2. Were you able to engage actively with people who specialize in various fields, regardless of your research area, and learn how to create “new knowledge” through cross-disciplinary interaction, and carry out projects from planning to implementation?
  3. While having a high level of reason and a strong sense of responsibility, has your research produced answers to various issues in contemporary society? Were you able to summarize the results derived from the research and practice of media expression and summarize it in a written thesis disseminating these results widely to society?
